Mr Nicholas Chan, Young Professional of the Year

Nicholas is the founder of Azione Capital and Managing Director of Fredrik Marine IT Services. His interest in IT was first piqued when he watched the 1983 movie "War Games". Nicholas first tested his self-taught IT skills by hacking his secondary school’s computer labs, resulting in his expulsion from the Computing Club. He was subsequently reinstated to represent the school in a team of three at the first Creative/Ngee Ann multimedia competition in 1994, where his team obtained a merit award for the school without any formal training or prior experience.

In 1996, prior to starting his first year in Singapore Polytechnic, Nicholas co-founded his first company S.C.N. Technologies, an IT trading and system integration company. Bitten by the entrepreneurial bug, he went on to co-found nine other companies, seven of which were technology companies.

His company, Azione Capital, is an early stage venture capital firm and one of three initial approved incubators appointed by the Media Development Authority, Interactive Digital Media Programme Office. His team of entrepreneurs managed and mentored a portfolio of 27 ICT start-ups and achieved eight successful exits to date.

As the Managing Director of Fredrik Marine IT Services, Nicholas developed various hardware and software solutions specifically for the demanding requirements of the global maritime industry since 2007. Under his leadership, the firm achieved and maintained a consistent level of customer satisfaction of 94% since 2008.

In 2013, he co-founded OpenRecruiters with Brandon Lee, an experienced HR practitioner. As the Chief Technology Officer, Nicholas worked with his partner to successfully raise venture funding and established operations in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong in the first three months of the company’s founding.

Recognising the need to bring together budding entrepreneurs and successful entrepreneur-mentors, Nicholas co-founded the non-profit organisation Project:Senso in 2003. He also hosts the monthly Singapore Entrepreneurs Network, the largest entrepreneur/technopreneur group in Singapore on MeetUp.com since 2005. He was also invited to be in the panel of judges for various business competitions in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Chile and the USA.

Nicholas is also regularly invited to speak at regional events and conferences such as Geekjam and Startup Weekend on the topics of technology start-ups, maritime ICT, and entrepreneurial leadership.

Nicholas enjoys thundering down highways across Singapore and Malaysia on his self-rebuilt 23-year-old 650cc adventure-touring bike while listening to Symphony 92.4. During his free time, he explores ways in leveraging technology to empower the Roman Catholic community in Singapore while tending to his orchids and herbs.
