Jessica Tan is both passionate and committed to the industry and its people. She has deep faith that the future of Singapore will be a "future of us" and, as the Managing Director of Microsoft Singapore, she rallies for inclusive growth within Microsoft and in the broader ecosystem.

Jessica believes in leveraging technology to narrow the opportunity divide within the community.

   

Underlying the areas she champion is the belief that we need to be empowered with the right skills to actively participate in the opportunities presented to us. To ensure that our youth are equipped with the right skill sets for the future, she initiated the Code for Change programme, a tie-up between IDA and Microsoft to bring computational thinking capabilities to our youth.

As Chairman of the IT Advisory Committee at Nanyang Polytechnic, an appointment she has held since July 2013, Jessica has enabled numerous industry collaborations such as the Cyber Security and Solutions Centre (2015) and the Ambient Intelligence Computing Centre (2015). Under her leadership, the IT Advisory Committee guided the School of Information Technology (SIT) to chart new directions and ensure that course offerings better prepare students for the industry.

 

    Jessica has also called for Microsoft's greater support of the local startup community which is another integral part of the local IT ecosystem. In addition to the Microsoft BizSpark programme that has benefitted close to 1,300 startups in Singapore, her leadership has resulted in Microsoft supporting the startup ecosystem more intimately by being a part of the LaunchPad@one-north, which hosts 500 startups and 35 incubators. She also challenged her team to better mentor startups through the BizSpark Residency Programme, where Microsoft offers 1,200 square feet of complimentary co-working space at the revamped Microsoft Innovation Centre to promising local startups.
 
    Jessica believes in leveraging technology to narrow the opportunity divide within the community. With the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD), she has played a major role in empowering people with disabilities through education and technology, including setting up the YouthSpark Scholarship which has helped 27 youths with disabilities pursue tertiary education in IT-related fields. She has also been instrumental in helping active seniors at the Retired & Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) upgrade skills which has helped some of them to secure a second career.

He has served in numerous capacities and led many working committees such as Chairman of the Student Chapter Board, Chairman of the National PC Proficiency Programme Committee, Chairman of the Membership Committee and President of the Interactive Digital Media Chapter.

Under his guidance, SCS also renewed collaborations with Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and QAI Global Institute, to add certifications to the existing three offered in SCS. 

    A Young Professional of the Year winner of the IT Leader Awards 1999 and SCS President's Award 2007 recipient, Chak has displayed great passion and visionary leadership serving in various roles in the Infocomm industry. Chak first joined SCS Executive Council in 1994 and was on the council for 12 consecutive years till 2006, taking on different key positions such as Vice-President and Honorary Secretary. He also took on the role of SCS President in 2012. He has served in numerous capacities and led many working committees such as Chairman of the Student Chapter Board, Chairman of the National PC Proficiency Programme Committee, Chairman of the Membership Committee and President of the Interactive Digital Media Chapter. 

 

   

With three decades of contributions to the infocomm industry, Chak is a well-known personality with an impressive track record. His interest in involving the youth and enabling them to actively participate in the advancement of the industry can be seen through his commitment to education, serving on the boards of various educational institutions. He also mentors young entrepreneurs and youths under the NUS Enterprise Programme and Young Entrepreneur Network by sharing his rich experience and knowledge.

Under his leadership, SCS membership grew by 13% and crossed the 30,000 mark in 2014. To further enhance the credibility of SCS membership, Chak helped to foster strategic partnership with organisations such as, Singapore Human Resource Institute (SHRI), National Trades Congress Union (NTUC) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Challenge of global ageing

In the 21st century, the world faces an unprecedented challenge – global ageing. Around the world, the elderly population is the fastest growing demographic group, thanks to the gradually but constantly increasing global life expectancy. By 2030, approximately one in five Singapore residents will be 65 years of age and older. With this significant demographic change taking place, it becomes more and more crucial to develop technologies that enable the elderly to live at home independently for as long as possible, thus reducing the burden on the healthcare system and on the country's economy more generally. Indeed, as part of its Smart Nation plan, Singapore has identified ageing in place as one of three priority areas, clearly showcasing its importance for the future of the nation.

 

As people age, they usually suffer from a decline in their sensorimotor functions, including vision deficiencies, hearing limitations, motor impairments, cognitive deterioration, and others. In this context, providing the elderly with affordable and practical systems and services that can improve their level of independence and thus enhance their quality of life has become a must for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) developers.

Virtual Reality (VR), which can also be referred to as immersive multimedia or computer-simulated reality, replicates an environment that simulates a physical presence in places in the real world or in an imagined world, allowing the user to interact in that world. Air pollution has become a global environmental problem affecting everyone's health. In today's globalized world, even Singapore cannot escape the plight of air pollution entirely. In 2015, Singapore had one of the worst haze episodes in her history due to persistent forest fires in neighboring countries coupled with unfavorable wind directions.

Air pollution typically occurs when the environment is contaminated by chemical, physical or biological agents that change the natural characteristics of the atmosphere. In view of that, monitoring air quality is usually done with equipment like sensors which are able to detect fine particulate matter in the environment. Advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) offer new ways of tackling the air quality monitoring challenge. Indeed, thanks to breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) and crowd science, new cost-effective solutions are now available.

 

Artificial Intelligence

The term ‘Artificial Intelligence' was coined in 1955, when it was defined as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines". It is also the name of the academic field of study which researches how to create computers and computer software that are capable of intelligent behavior. Major AI researchers and textbooks define this field as "the study and design of intelligent agents", in which an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chances of success.

Infocomm Media 2025: What's in it for You and I?

Two years in the making, the recently unveiled Infocomm Media 2025 report on August 11 points the way to realising Singapore's goal as the world's first Smart Nation. Not surprisingly, you and I are integral to the achievement of this master plan.

More than a holistic blueprint for Singapore's infocomm media sectors for the decade ahead, Infocomm Media 2025 offers a compass to navigate the ever-changing environment and leverage potential of upcoming technology and business trends.

In a world where technologies evolve, business models change and disruptions by the unexpected constantly take place, the Plan sets out to not only create a globally competitive infocomm media ecosystem that enables and complements Singapore's Smart Nation vision, but also provide a "living" reference on broad directions and strategic focus areas. These include the need to:

• capitalise on data, advanced communications and computational technologies to create a quantum leap in Singapore's competitiveness,

nurture an ecosystem that encourages risk-taking to create Singapore-made content, products and services, and

connect Singapore's people through infocomm media to enhance quality of life and foster a stronger Singapore identity.


DATA WILL CONNECT BUSINESSES TO PEOPLE
Data and analytics will play a big part in many areas, underpinning Singapore's efforts in becoming a Smart Nation. For example, intelligence on traffic patterns paves the way for more efficient urban logistics and smoother city commutes; data insights gained from location-based services and mobile apps enable retailers to better connect with customers, increasing the probability of sale closure.

Similarly, media services companies can turn to audience measurement tools, which take into account minute details of customer behaviour, to predict customers' consumption habits and offer relevant products and/or services at opportune moments. Case in point: a game service analyses players' on-screen actions to predict when they would most likely purchase an in-game item or watch an in-game advertisement.


INFRASTRUCTURE WILL BE MORE ROBUST
Usually, talk of data and analytics involves sensors. Whether they are virtual sensors that measure online actions or physical ones that detect air quality, they require robust infrastructure to deliver raw data. To which end, Singapore is currently bolstering the island-wide fibre optic network with HetNet – heterogeneous network technology – to ensure pervasive and strong connectivity, as well as more efficient use of limited radio frequency spectrum so that more end users can be hooked up on the go.

Seven Tips for Better Networking

For many, walking into a room and introducing themselves to strangers is a daunting prospect. As a result, many miss out on networking as an effective tool to form connections. In this issue of The IT Society, Suren and Tommy from ITYC provide simple and practical solutions to make networking work for you and I. 

The key takeaways from career talks and seminars tend to be along the lines of "networking is very important" and that "networking can take you places and open up opportunities." However, not many speakers delve into what networking is and how to network. Here are seven tips on networking that will help you make better progress and form stronger connections.that accounted for this.

 

1. Be confident 

 

• Confidence comes from the belief you have in yourself. Practice and prepare mentally. Everyone loves a person who can carry himself/herself well. Iron your shirt and dress well, but try not to overdress. 

 

2. Learn the art of small talk and listening

 

Great conversations often start with a little bit of banter. Prepare a few starting questions such as "How was your day?"; "What are you currently doing?" Also, think of some simple follow up questions before the event. 

 

3. Set yourself apart by thinking before you speak


• When keeping up the flow of conversation, don't forget to listen to the other person. Always pause to think about what you're going to say. This one or two seconds may feel long to you, but if something intelligent comes out, the delay would be well worth the while.
